Ehret die Frauen

This is a detail from Marianne Stokes' 1912 tapestry "Ehret die Frauen." The text across the top is taken from Schiller's "Wurde der Frauen" and reads:

Honor to the women; they braid and weave heavenly roses into earthly life.

The legends at the sides and bottom identify the allegorical figures depicted:  Schutz (courage); Pflege (care & cultivation); Liebe (love); Wissen (wisdom & learning); Treue (Fidelity).  Stokes nailed it on the head--what it means to be a great woman.  And the details!  The pelican, the banners, the owl, the little wax tablet . . .
