To this end, what about one new book per subject per year? 

As I am teaching medieval and modern European history, it seems time to tackle Eamon Duffy's The Stripping of the Altars.  The Atlantic Monthly gave a great review of this book here.  If you are looking for something historical, here is a list to get you started.
