Beautiful Surroundings

Reading Mortimer Adler's The Paideia Proposal gave me some excellent second semester resolutions, including:  keeping to this ratio: 1 part lecture to 3 parts subsequent Q&A; teaching students to compose verse; have the students keep running vocabulary lists; no more permitting slovenly homework; and finally--making sure the surroundings are beautiful.  A fellow teacher always hangs beautiful art and keeps a vase of fresh flowers in one of her classrooms.

I went out and got a Kalanchoe which needs little water and not much sunlight and has the loveliest blooms.  The photograph at left is available at as a free desktop wallpaper.
